Marvellous Measuring!

This week we have been learning about how to measure the length of something. We have found out that you can measure things using non-standard units of measure and standard units of measure. It is important that whatever you use you must be accurate and take your time. We have had lots of fun using different things to measure with. Remember to estimate first then record your results accurately!
Have a look at our photos of us measuring different things using non-standard units of measure...

Broadgreen House Visit - November 15th

Today we had a fantastic day at Broadgreen House. We saw lots of things from the past and heard all about how the Buxton family used to live over 100 years ago. The kitchen was fascinating because we saw the huge pots that they cooked in and the old copper that they used to boil water in to wash the clothes. The lives of maids and cooks back then must have been very hard as they had to cook and clean for over 15 people!

After we finished looking through the house we had a picnic lunch and then did some sketching. It was a wonderful day full of lots of learning experiences. A big thank you to all of the parents who came and helped us.

Giraffes are Bakers!

The children have been learning to follow instructions so that we can learn all about how they are written so we can write our own. The Giraffe's used their reading book to make a Happy Cake. They worked well as a team and followed the recipe precisely. The cake turned out to be delicious!
The Zebra's are next up..... I wonder what they are going to make?

Life Education - Hello Harold!

We have been so lucky this week to go into the Life Education Caravan twice. We have learnt lots of new things about how we breathe. We found out all about the Respiratory System. It is so important that we breathe fresh, clean air! The children loved meeting Harold and they all got their photo taken with him. Check out our slide show to see our cool photos!

Learning about the Past ... Letter Writing!

This term our topic is 'The Past'

We are going to be comparing what children's lives were like in the past compared to our lives now. To start finding out about what the past was like we are writing letters to our Grandparents. We have thought of lots of interesting questions to ask them like;

When you were a child...
* What toys did you play with?
* How did you get to school?
* What was your favourite food?
* How did you travel around?

This week we have been busy writing our letters getting them ready to post. We will be sending them in the post box down the road. Some letters are going to nearby places like Richmond and Wakefield. Some letters will be posted to the North Island to places like Orewa and Fielding. But the letter that is going to go the furthest is Ian's letter to his Oma and Opa who live in The Netherlands. Wow.... that is a really long way and we wonder how long it is going to take to get there?
We are very excited to see if we get letters in return...... we will keep you 'POSTED!'

Brookie-Lee is proud to be an Auntie..... she has been helping her sister Crystal look after baby Keva at home.

Capacity - MATHS FOCUS

This week we have been learning all about CAPACITY & VOLUME.

We have been working hard in pairs to solve lots of different challenges involving measuring the capacity of different vessels (containers). For each station we first have to estimate what we think the capacity of each container is. It has been hard to think about sensible estimations.

The key words we are learning this week are; capacity, volume, estimate, vessel, container, measure, litre, fill, more, less, equal.

Have a look at some of the children working at one of the stations!

Squares Amazing Maths!

This week the Triangles have been working their socks off! They are trying hard with their maths goals and have been thinking of all the ways they can make 10. Jordan and Tessa wanted to share their super thinking with us! Take a peek.

Circles Marvellous Maths!

This week the Circles have been trying so hard to achieve their goals in maths. They have been working hard on thinking of as many ways to make 20. This will help them to solve addition and subtraction problems to 20 in their heads. Look at the fantastic thinking we did!

Triangles Magical Maths!

This week we have been working so hard on our number work. In the Triangle group we have been trying hard to solve addition problems to 100 by counting on in tens from the biggest number. Have a look at the following photo's that show our thinking! We are awesome at it!

Poetry Recitals

This week we have been learning to read poems using expression. It is important that you remember to read poems out loud with good rhythm and rhyme. Some of the children in Room One filmed themselves on the ipad reading their poems out loud to each other. Listen and see what you think,  I think they did a great job!

The opening of the Olympic Games 2012

During our first week together the children learnt all about the Olympic flag. The children found out that the five rings represent the 5 original continents that competed in the games; Asia, Africa, The America's, Europe and Australasia. We also found out that the reason why the rings are linked is to represent how the athletes at the Olympic games come together in friendship and unity. We made our own Olympic flags. It was very tricky to link our rings correctly and get the colours  in the correct order. Once we had finished our flags we had a parade outside and took this cool photo!
Go the Kiwi's!

Room 1 are great mathematicians!

We are learning to use place value to solve tricky addition sums.
We add all of the tens first and then add the ones.
Jordy solved these maths equations all by himself with no materials.  You are so clever Jordy!

We are learning to create exciting sentences.  We had to choose a noun (thing) and use an adjective to describe it and include a verb (action) that it would do.  We each wrote 5-8 sentences and chose our favourite one for the blog.

Shared Lunch

Yesterday all of the kids and some parents from Room 1 surprised me with a shared lunch and a beautiful card with messages from each child.  It was very special.  Thank you very much parents and Room 1.  I will miss seeing all of your smiling faces and teaching you.  You are a fabulous class and Mrs Gianelly is so lucky to have such a terrific bunch of children to teach.
