School Cross Country

We had our cross country at Lord Rutherford Park and it was the Room 2 boys v Room 1 boys. It was also the Room 1 girls vs the Room 2 girls. I came 1st.
I was very tired at the end of the race. Leo was right behind me. It was a tough race and I had fast shoes on my feet but Jaxson over took Leo so Jaxson came second.  There were lots of fast people and I was happy that I won. I got an ice cream at home and Mum and Dad were very proud of me!

Powhiri

On a rainy Monday that was today, we had a Powhiri in the hall. There were two ladies visitors who were girls. One of them spoke in Maori. We had to stand up three times to sing songs. The Middles and Seniors who went to Kapa Haka did a thing but I can't remember what it was called. It was good.        Eden

Today Brightwater School had a Powhiri welcome. There were two ladies from Christchurch. One of them sang a song but when they came in there were two girls who sang the karanga call. After that, Brightwater School sang the school song, Wairama. The boys in the Kapa Haka group preformed the haka. I loved it, it was a great time.       Jet

Show - Down, Beneath and Below

There were beautiful white wings in our school hall. I went to see the Down, Beneath and Below Show. When the show was almost close to the end the character's predators came to them. They were scared and they cuddled together. I felt scared like them. Their predators were some black things, I thought what are they?
I want to see it again. I liked it and I felt amazed through most of the show.

Science Week

Last Friday's Discovery Time was a little bit different  because Mrs Roberts made the roof wet. We did some science experiments.  The water blasted up like a fireworks. The cork shot up like a rocket and fell like a rock. You needed to wear safety glasses just in case it
hit you in the face. She was mixing stuff into the bottle . In the bottle there were bubbles .

Wheels Class Treat

Guess what? Room 1 had a Wheels Day. It was awesome and fun. Nate brought a thing that did a skid when you put the brake on and I brought my speedy bike. Will had a turn on my bike. Skateboards were inside the circle of cones. Lucy R had a go-cart and you had to push it to make go. Someone had to sit in the seat and steer it.
I got to ride my bike over the bridge, up the hill and back again. It was an exciting class treat and I would like to have it again.

Room 1 made little cork place-mats for hot drinks. We are going to give them to our Mum's for Mother's Day on Sunday.
Mrs Roberts cut out square shapes and then we sanded the sides until they were nice and smooth. Next we drew flowers or love hearts and then we used a vivid to go over the pictures to make the pictures nice and dark. Finally Mrs Roberts sprayed varnish onto them, lots of times. They are shiny and Mum's will love them.

School Market Day

Room 1's stall

On Friday Brightwater School had a market. I was really excited. When it came, first up I was a shopkeeper at Room 1's stall. I felt happy, we were selling bags of pinecones, pinecone creatures, decorated bottles, decorated biscuits and more. Everyone had school money, $5, $2 and $1, and it was $20 altogether. We had it in a small, plastic bag. I want to have another one because it was so much fun. We got $225 for selling stuff on our stall.                                                                   Kate

Discovery Time

Room 1 does cool stuff at Discovery Time.
There are tennis rackets and balls that are hit against the wall. We can do making BrainBox which is electricity stuff. We play with the blocks, stacking them and make buildings. Room 1 paints and draws. We play with the bouncing balls and we throw them on the wall. Our class can play with the playdough to cut, roll and make things. There is a big bouncy ball that is a tennis ball and we can play Piggy in the Middle.
Jacob's Mum  brought us a pile of dirt so that we can dig and make roads. We also play on the computers and ipads. It is the best time at school each week.       by Nate and Will

Suter Gallery and Museum Visits

Wow! we had such an amazing time last week. First we visited the Suter gallery and there was lots of different maori people and containers made of clay. The people only had three fingers. After we had a look at everything our class went to a small room with some adults. The lady gave us a piece of clay each and we weren't allowed to play with it. Our first job was to make a ball and squeeze it into a star with five points - Patrick Star! We made a head, two arms and two legs.
Room 1 and 2 had lunch at the Queen's Gardens and there were ducks everywhere because they wanted our food.
At the Museum Nicky told us lots about plants and so did some parents. Sue helped us do sketching, Rosa's made told us about the food chain, Lucy W's Dad taught us about native plants and Lucas's Mum showed us the parts of plants. We all learned lots of new things.

Pool Party

Room 1 earned  a class treat and we chose to have an exciting pool party. Children brought water guns, boogie boards and other water toys such as a horse!
We had buckets of fun such as having water fights, squirting Mrs Roberts and diving into the warm pool.
When we were squirted we felt sad, cold, shocked and we were ducking from the water guns. It was funny and Room 1 would be really, really pleased to have another pool party.

Our Scary Scarecrow!

We made a scarecrow at school yesterday and it will be sold at our School Gala next weekend.

First we had to put the shirt on the wooden cross and then we did up the buttons so Room 1 children could  full it with hay which was quite tricky. The scarecrow looked very fat and he has gloves for his hands. Next, some children tied the bottoms of the trouser legs and they were also filled with hay. Mrs Roberts put a hole in the seat of the trousers so the stick could go through it and the shirt was pinned to the trousers so that they didn't fall down! Finally we filled an old sack to make a head and tied it onto the stick above the shirt. A face was painted on it and we think our scarecrow looks rather strange.
