Mrs Stewart is Leaving

It is Mrs Stewarts last day at Brightwater School. We are so sad that she is leaving, so all of the school is going to sing a song at Assembly in the afternoon and she had a ride on a shiny white helicopter in the back field. Before she went in the helicopter the whole school stood in two lines and Mrs Stewart walked down the middle. It was so windy when it landed onto the grass.We clapped for Mrs Stewart and said have a nice ride.
Today we are going to the hall to sing the song about her. The song was called 'See you Later Mrs Stewart' and another song which is called Ma Te Mahi Ka Ora.
For lunch we had a shared lunch. Mostly everyone brought some lunch. I tried to find some healthy stuff. We also made a video about Brightwater School and a scrap book to give to her. Goodbye Mrs Stewart.

Feeding the Calves

poo  it was stinky at James's farm. First Gemma got out the calf feeder. Then the 50 calves squeezed in to get their milk.  Next we saw the bobby calves that mooed lots. They were in a shed. One of them butted me hard when we were feeding it. The one that butted me was black  and white.
Next we walked up  a smallish hill and I held Mrs Roberts hand so that I didn't fall in the stinky, yucky mud. Mrs  Roberts chose two calves to take to her place.

It was fun seeing all the calves and the also the Milk Tanker came and collected the milk from the night and morning milking. Room 1 had a fun time.            by Joanna

Museum Visit

On Friday afternoon Room 1 went to the Nelson Museum to learn about Lynley Dodd the author. We got to draw a character from a Hairy Maclary book. Charlie drew Bitsa Maloney all skinny and boney and Maia did Bitsa Maloney too. There was lots of Lynley Dodd's art work for her books

on the walls at the museum.
At the front of the museum we were sitting on the front step of the Nelson museum then a man came and scared me off the front step. We went up 2 sets of steps and went past a glass window. Charlie went with his mum and I went with James. Charlie liked the museum because he did drawing and I liked the same thing.

Chocolate Bubble Cakes Recipe

We used the scales to measure and make Chocolate Bubble Cakes. 250 g vegetable shortening 100 g icing sugar 25 grams cocoa 100 grams rice bubbles 100 grams coconut Put vegetable shortening in a saucepan. Cook over a low heat until melted. Sift icing sugar and cocoa together. Add sifted ingredients, rice bubbles and coconut to saucepan, stirring until well combined. Spoon mixture evenly into paper patty cases. Chill until firm. How many cakes did you make? What is the mass of each cake? What is the mass of coconut in each cake? If I wanted to make 100 patty cakes how much cocoa would I need?

Firefighter visit last week.

We were very fortunate to have Fire Safety Officer Ross Bailey visit Room 1 last week.

Ross was very impressed with our Firewise knowledge.

Matches and lighters are tools, not toys.  If you find them, give them to an adult to put in a safe place.

If the smoke alarm goes- get out, stay out, well done. 

We practiced what to do if there is smoke. Get down, get low, get out.  We practiced

going to our safe place at school.

Then Ross presented us with our Firewise certificates.

Well done Room 1. You are Firewise.

Hot Air Balloon Flight

Mrs Roberts and her daughter Amelia experienced a most exciting air balloon flight over Beaudesert  near the Tambourine Mountains, inland from Brisbane. They watched the sparkly sun, rise above the distant hills as they floated over the tall trees. All of a sudden the wind became quite strong so the pilot had to make  a rapid decent which resulted in a roll-over landing!

Hi Room 1

I hope you all had a good holiday break and you are ready to do your best work for Mrs Cairns.
I am enjoying working at different schools in Brisbane, meeting lots of children who have come from many different countries and their class teachers.
It is quite a lot warmer here as most days it feels like a good summers day in Nelson although it is a bit cooler in the evenings.
I will send you a photo by email of my air balloon flight on Wednesday and it should be great fun.

Cool Sports

Today we did cool sports. My favourite was rugby. We had to get to half way then we had to throw the dull coloured ball in the air. When we came into the person we had to throw the rugby ball to them.    Harrison
Room 1 also had a turn at tip-toeing over the rope ladder and jumping over the low hurdles. We had to throw a tennis ball underarm and  a buddy had to try and catch the ball in a net. Cricket was an another activity and it involved throwing a ball at the wicket and the final one was bouncing a basketball to a cone and back again. We all had a really fun time with Kelly Sports.

Visit To Natureland

Room 1 went to Natureland Zoo, we saw lots of different animals. I went with Eli, in my own car that was red. I saw some Rainbow lorikeet and they had diffrent colours like the rainbow. I've seen one of those in Western Australia. Marmite the pukeko kept on chasing Mrs Roberts black gumboots.
I saw monkeys and they pee on their hands and wipe it on their bodies. My favourite animal was the Rainbow Lori

keet. I liked the capucin monkeys when they kept bashing their walnuts and checking them a lot. We ate lunch there and had a play there. Marmite kept following us around Natureland. I wish I could see the meerkats again.     by Toby

Hangi at School

On Monday at school there was a Hangi and guess what, Brightwater School got to see it! There was meat, potatoes, cabbage, kumera, pumpkin, chicken, lamb, pork and the last one, carrots.
Four men woke up at four o'clock and one of them was Mr Hikuroa. It took four hours to cook all the food for the whole school and the whole Kindergarten.
The steam was rising up in the sky from the sacks and they were covered in dirt. The men lit up some metal and then put it in the fire and let it burn. Mr H put the food in the baskets and then put it in  a big hole called a pit. Then he covered it all up again but Mr H and his friends didn't dig out the big pit, Nico and Luca's Dad has a digger and he dug the pit out.

Finally it was time to eat. I got my plate from Mr Dobbie and I moved up the line because it was my turn to get the food. When I had my food I went to sit down on the concrete. I tasted the food immediately. I thought it tasted delicious. I loved it!                                                 by Jaymee

School Cross Country Race

Jaymee won the girls race and Tessa was second. Everyone in Room 1 ran as fast as they could! The Brightwater School Cross Country was held at The Lord Rutherford Park and lots of parents came to watch their children compete in the races. At finish of the races we were all given a small carton of milk to drink and it was yummy.

Making our own Butter!

The first thing I had to do was sit at a desk. Then Mr B came and gave us a container. Next he put some cream in our containers.

Room 1 had to shake the containers for 20 minutes. My arms got tired. My cream turned into butter, but not all of it!

Yesterday Mr B came to Room One. We made butter. First we needed three things, one of them was a cup, the next thing was a bottle and also a sieve.
You put some cream in the cup, shut the lid and shook it for twenty minutes. Then we tipped it out of the cup onto the sieve and onto a plate. There was butter!

Swimming Lessons

Our class has just completed two weeks of exciting swimming lessons at the Richmond Aquatic Centre. All the children have made great progress in their kicking and stroking so we are all super Freestyle  Swimmers! At the end of the last swimming lesson the children in our class was put into two groups  and we had a race to see which team could paddle the big float board the quickest and it was a ... draw! We travelled by bus and it was a good chance to chat with each other.
After our lesson each day we spent the next half hour in the wave and warm pools. The waves were rolling down the pool on Friday and we all had a fantastic time jumping and crashing through them.
The Lazy River was a cool place to hung out as we raced around the narrow track.

The best activity of all was when we were wearing lifejackets and we were allowed to jump off the concrete wall into the deep end of the Wave Pool. It was a bit scary but awesome fun!             by Room 1
