Maths - Measurement
Maths: Measurement - Weight on PhotoPeach
We had fun learning how to measure the weight of different things. We had lots of different activities to help us learn about the weight of objects and using the scales. We decided it is important to know how to measure things especially when it comes to baking!

Old McDonald & the Bionic Bunny Show
Old McDonald and Bionic Bunny Show on PhotoPeach
Old McDonald had a farm but poor weather conditions meant he had to sell most of his animals! Then the evil Farmer Jane set a bionic bunny onto his fields to ruin his farm forever so that people could sing about her instead of Old McDonald! Jip, his trusty farmdog, and the few remaining animals helped to save the day. The show was very funny and the actors were very, very talented. We hope they come again with a different show next year!

Writing - Adding Details: The boy ran to the finish line.
Room 1 has been learning to focus on one idea and make it sound really interesting.
They were given the story "The boy ran to the finish line." Their challenge was to rewrite the same story but make it sound more interesting to the reader.
The class decided it would be more interesting if they used adjectives and similes. They thought it could do with more details like; how the boy looked, what his body was doing, how he felt, what he heard and what he saw.
Here are some of the new and improved stories. Do you think they sound more interesting?
The speedy, fast boy ran to the white flapping flag. He was limping and he felt tired because he had such a long race. He was puffed. He had spiky hair and red cheeks as red as a rose. He is fit. His body was wobbling like jelly when he was finished. - Ella
The little boy staggered across the white finish line. He was so proud of himself. He badly wanted to win a prize. Lots of people cheered for him. His legs shaked (shook) because when he stood on the ground he stomped. - Tessa
The speedy boy darted to the shiny, white finish line. Everyone cheered for the boy as he zipped past them. He was so fast that he past everyone and won the race.
- Daniel
The speedy boy who ran as fast as a cheetah raced to the finish line and he got a prize! He got a bag of lollipops. Was he fit? Yes he was! People cheered for the boy who was racing. - Harlyn

Holiday Recounts
In the fantastic holiday we went for a 3 hour drive. We stayed for 5 fantastic Easter nights and we went fishing. We got 5 sharks and 1 cod and a sting ray.

Wow! This aqua taxi goes really fast it must be going about one hundred knots. It must have a powerful engine. It feels like we are going as fast as a rocket. When we got off we walked to large Torrent Bay. On the way back we had to take three aqua taxis back to Kaiteriteri. When we hopped on the third boat we had to be careful because both boats were out at the sparkly sea.

Oral Language
We have been learning to ask questions after people have shared their news. This makes sure we are listening and thinking about what is being said. At first we found asking questions confusing and got them mixed up with comments. We think we are pretty good at it now!
Have a listen to Jorja, Paris and Daniel's news from the weekend and the questions we had for them.

The Variety Bash
The Variety Bash came to Brightwater School to raise money for sick kids. Vroom,
all the cars came in with yummy treats and a funny show. My favourite part was
the underpants trick. Woosh, water came outof the fire truck hose.
- Daniel
Today the Variety Bash came. The cars raced into the school. We got delicious
yummy treats. Lots of people had hilarious hats. When Variety Bash was here
we got soaking wet. The super hero show was hilarious and magic and he
picked two people to go up. MT meant empty.

Oral Language
In Room 1 we do a variety of Oral Language activities during the week including sharing news, Mystery Bag (open ended questions), Maori Language, buzz groups, donut speeches, and listening activities. We focus on making sure we are speaking clearly and being good listeners. We discussed exactly what a good listener and a good speaker does.
Today we shared our news in buzz groups and then came back as a class. Haylee, Jamie, Piper, Liam, Chloe and Josh then presented their news to the whole class.
Have a listen to their exciting weekends:

Problem Solving
On Friday we did a range of problem solving activities for Maths.
One of our activities involved estimating. We found out this means to think hard and make a sensible guess.
Our problem was: How many cubes does it take to make a 1 metre tall tower?
We estimated:
Marcus - 15 Kathryn - 60
Taine - 30 Matthew - 60
Haylee - 50 Liam - 50
Jarrad - 10
Then we measured and found the actual answer.
Results: It took 54 cubes to make a 1metre tall tower. None of us were correct but Liam and Haylee were the closest.
