Art and the iPad

Today Mrs Robertson took photos of us on the iPad2. Then we looked at all the fun things we could do to the photo like putting on borders, making it into a stamp or changing the colour. We turned our faces into a pencil sketch.

Then we used warm or cold colours to outline and shade certain features. We learned our noses are not circles and go right up to our eyebrows.

Can you guess who is who? Leave comments below.
You will have to come and check the cloak bay to see if you were right!

Frog School Play

This week three readers from Room 2 have been working with three readers from Room 1 preparing a play to perform to the class. They practised the play by themselves and organised the props. They read with fluency and expression and followed the script so they knew when to come in. Well Done.

Descriptive Language

On Thursday we got to watch a 1minute snippet of a scene from Finding Nemo on YouTube. We paused the video to look at different features of Bruce (shark) and Marlin (clown fish). We made a huge of list of describing words (adjectives) about them. Then we talked about how they moved (verbs). Here are some of our descriptive stories...

The shark had evil eyes and a very hungry tummy. He wanted to eat the fish. The fish had smooth skin and the shark had a long tail and sharp teeth. He was fast at gliding and he was slippery. - Tom

In Finding Nemo Bruce the shark has a croaky voice and sharp teeth. The fish are scared of him so they dive across the sea. The fish are scared, frightened and terrified. - Ameera

Bruce has sharp teeth. They are very sharp. Bruce looks slimy and sludgy. The fish were terrified. Bruce is a great white shark. - Callum R

In Finding Nemo Bruce the shark was big and scary. Bruce had sharp and pointy teeth. Nemo was orange and white. Nemo had a small swishing tail. Nemo moved quickly around corners. Nemo was tiny. - Lane

The shark had very sharp teeth. The fish moved with their fins. The shark chased them. When they saw the shark their eyes went bigger. The shark said hello in a freaky voice. - Callum C

Tens Frames

In Maths some of us are learning to instantly recognise patterns to 10 on tens frames.
Next term some of us will be learning to add groups by imagining tens frames in our heads and filling up the empty spaces.

Click on this new game to practise. Move your way through the activities on the left hand side.

KiwiSports Day

Yesterday the junior school went to Wakefield School for Kiwisports Day. Hope, Ranzau, Wakefield and Appleby Schools were all there. We were put into groups and went around 6 different activities. There was a huge variety of activities including: jump jam, rugby, soccer, hockey, ball games, petanque, earth ball, parachute, obstacle courses and more!

Then we went to Faulkners Bush for lunch, climbed up to the look out, went on the playground and had a go on the flying fox.

What a terrific day!

Thanks to all of those who came to watch and who took transport.

Making Candyfloss

Today we went into the hall to watch the ladies make the candyfloss for the school gala. It was interesting to see how the sugar goes in the hole and spins around fast and turns into the candy floss. We were extra lucky to be given a taste each! Thank you!

Water Cycle Writing

Yesterday we learned about the Water Cycle. Today we looked at the cycle again and during writing we had to describe what happens to the water. Here are three of our descriptions.

The water goes around and around in a circle. It starts in the sea and then it turns into gas and then it turns into clouds and then it rains on the mountains and it keeps going around.
Harry

Water has been around for a long time since the dinosaurs! The water first starts on the ground and then the sun heats it up and then it floats into the sky. Then it turns into clouds and then it rains. Then is falls onto the mountains and then it goes to the lakes and then it goes to the rivers and then it goes to sea and it keeps going around in a circle.
Reichen

The water was here before the dinosaurs came. It starts on the ground then goes up because of the sun. The wind blows the water into the clouds. When the cloud gets heavy the water turns into rain or snow.
Ameera

Room 1 gets an iPad 2

Room 1 was lucky enough to be given a brand new iPad2 to help our learning. Today in writing Anya wrote and illustrated a story using Scribble Pad. We then took a screen shot of her work and have uploaded it to the blog. Her story is sitting in iPad library bookshelf so we can go back and read it any time we want! We will add lots of our own stories to the iPad library.

Thanks for the iPad 2 Mr Baldwin!

Topic: Our Amazing Earth...

Today for topic we found out that water is even older than the dinosaurs!!! It keeps going around and around in a cycle called The Water Cycle.

We read The Magic School Bus story about a class who gets turned into water and they go through the water cycle! It would be crazy to be in that class!

We then made a poster displaying the water cycle by putting the pictures, arrows and words in the right place.

We learned some big words like:
evaporation (when the sun heats up and turns the water into a gas which you can't see and it goes into the sky)
condensation (when the gas in the sky gets cold and turns back into a liquid and forms a cloud)
precipitation (when the water in the clouds gets too heavy and drops the water back into the earth - either as rain, hail or snow).

Robot Stories

We read a story called Robots Run Riot. In the story there were different robots which each did special jobs. We then wrote robot stories describing the sort of robot we would love to be or have!!!! Next we recorded our voices on Garage Band and used a special effect to make us sound like robots! It was lots of fun and we learned:
*to be creative in our writing
*to read with clear voices
*to use the computers to record our voices and use special effects

Listen to our stories below.

MAKING PIKELETS!!!

Mrs Robertson brought pancake mix, maple syrup, jam and an electric frying pan to school today....In Discovery Time we got to make mini pancakes (pikelets) with Nicki!!!

We had to be careful using the hot pan.
The mixture was sticky.
We flipped the pancakes when they were bubbling.
We spread runny maple syrup or raspberry jam on them.

We thought they were:
yummy
delicious
tasty
sweet
super scrumptious

THANKS NICKI
